What is merging?
All data that you put into OneGreatFamily is matched against data from other members. Each individual and family is a different record, and each record is separately dealt with in the merging process.
When two duplicate (or very similar) records are found, they are automatically merged. When you see a light bulb next to a record, this means that the record has a possible match.
Click on a light bulb to bring up two similar records. The left box will contain your record, while the right box will contain the similar record. Press the Merge button in the right box if these two records are the same. If you are not sure, use Collaboration to find out. Press the Clear button if the records should not be merged.
After the two records are merged, any differences in information will become conflicts (lightning bolts) for the new single record. (For example: If your record said Individual born 1588 and the similar record said born 1589.)
A yellow exclamation mark in the Starfield indicates a merged record. In order to see these, you must have the exclamation mark on the toolbar selected. Please see What should I know about matching and merging?

Should I merge or not?
The first things you should look at are the names. Even with all of the work going on in genealogy today, the exact spellings of some names are still disputed. Sometimes spelling could be different, but the person could be the same; consequently, many times people can have the same name but are different. Also, notice if they have a Jr., Sr., or some other title; this can help identify who they are.
Dates are very important. You don''t want to accidentally merge a father and son because they share the same name. If there are wide date discrepancies for a record, you don''t want to add to the problem.
Don''t hesitate to ask the submitter of the information about it. OneGreatFamily is designed to allow members to communicate and work together to build their family trees. Using Collaboration can save you time and effort.
